The gear selector shaft is so long that it applies too much leverage on the gearbox... making gear changes a little less precise and creating a lot of play in the gear lever and, as a result, pressing on the selector shaft seal, it can cause the seal to leak, with the consequences you can imagine in the long term. 

And ending up with oil everywhere isn't very pleasant!
